Millennium Mound History

The construction of Krakus Mound can be traced back to the prehistoric Iron Age, built by ancient Slavic tribes through rammed earth stacking, with a history of more than two thousand years. Legend has it that this is the burial place of Krakus, the founding king of Kraków. Since ancient times, it has been endowed with sacred significance and served as a sanctuary for tribal sacrifices and ritual gatherings. Die Legende vom Grab des Königs

Mittelalterliche Chronisten – Wincenty Kadłubek im 12. und Jan Długosz im 15. Jahrhundert – überliefern die Tradition, dass unter diesem Hügel Krakus (Krak), der legendäre Gründer Krakaus, bestattet wurde. Lange bevor die Archäologie dies prüfen konnte, machte der Glaube an ein Königsgrab den Erdwall zu einem heiligen Ort des Gedenkens und der Opfergaben. Heutige Wissenschaftler betrachten die Erzählung eher als Ursprungslegende der Stadt denn als gesicherte Geschichte.

Krakus und der Wawel-Drache

Die bekannteste Gründungssage Krakaus erzählt von einem Drachen, der unter dem Wawel-Hügel hauste. In vielen Fassungen wird das Untier durch eine List besiegt – ein mit brennendem Schwefel gefülltes Schaffell, als Schaf angeboten –, und zwar durch die Söhne des Krak, durch den König selbst oder durch einen bescheidenen Schuhmacherlehrling namens Skuba. Die Sage verbindet den urzeitlichen Hügel, das Wawel-Schloss und den Namen der Stadt (von Krak) zu einer Geschichte, auch wenn Sprachwissenschaftler andere Namensursprünge vorschlagen.

Rękawka – ein altes Fest am Hügel

Bis in die Neuzeit versammelten sich in der Woche nach Ostern Menschen am Fuß des Hügels zum alten Fest Rękawka. Man rollte hartgekochte Eier und Speisen den Hang hinab – ein Brauch, der weithin als Überbleibsel des slawischen Totenmahls (stypa) gilt. Eine volkstümliche Deutung verbindet den Namen mit dem Ärmel (rękaw): Der Hügel sei der Sage nach entstanden, weil Menschen Erde in ihren Ärmeln trugen. Seit den frühen 2000er-Jahren beleben lokale Gruppen die Tradition als historische Nachstellungen mit Handwerk und mittelalterlichen Spielen neu.

Ausgrabungen und das Rätsel des Alters

Mit etwa 16 Metern Höhe und rund 50 Metern Durchmesser an der Basis gehört der Hügel zu den größten urzeitlichen Erdwerken dieser Art in Polen. Ausgrabungen im 19. Jahrhundert und in den 1930er-Jahren fanden keine legendäre Grabkammer; Keramik, Schmuck und andere Funde weisen jedoch auf menschliche Aktivität am Hügel in mehreren Epochen seit der Eisenzeit hin. Das genaue Entstehungsdatum und die ursprüngliche Funktion bleiben umstritten; die meisten Fachleute ordnen den Hügel der vorchristlichen Tradition von Grab- und Kultstätten zu.
